Tiago Guerreiro

Associate Professor, Group Coordinator

Tiago Guerreiro is an Associate Professor at the University of Lisbon and a researcher at LASIGE. His research is focused on improving health, accessibility, and privacy, through and to technology, following a user-centred design approach. In these areas, he has published 75+ peer-reviewed papers. He received awards for 10+ papers, including at ASSETS, CHI, SOUPS, HRI and MHCI, and an ACM Best of Computing award in 2016. He is Editor-in-Chief for ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing. He is ASSETS 2020 General Chair. He was the Web for All General and Program Chair, in 2016 and 2015, respectively, was Chair of the “Accessibility & Aging” Subcommittee for CHI 2019, has been an associate chair for CHI in the last six editions, among many other service roles. He participated in 10+ EU and 1 IMI project. He was an expert evaluator for H2020 EU and ERA ICPermed calls and was an invited expert supporting the European Commission in implementing the Web Accessibility Directive. He is the President of his institution’s Ethics Review Board, the coordinator of LASIGE’s research line on Accessibility and Aging, and member of the coordination board of the Data Science Master. He leads the Tech&People Lab.

A privacy-aware keyboard toolkit for data collection in-the-wild. With it you will be able to collect everyday typing data, enabling continuous and spontaneous assessments, without collecting any sensitive information.

Accessible Text-Entry

For over 10 years we have investigated nonvisual text input on touchscreens. We have characterized in dept users’ behaviors and contributed with novel interfaces and interaction techniques.

Biographical and Personalized Cognitive Stimulation

We explore how biographical information can improve cognitive stimulation and design interactive platforms to support people with dementia, clinicians, and families.

Haptics and mobile devices! In Braille I/O we have focused on bringing Braille back to the forefront of the digital era with novel techniques and a exploration of haptics to enable text input on mobile devices.

Data-Driven Healthcare

Our goal is to increase and improve the information clinicians and patients have access. We explore and develop mechanisms for collecting, processing, and analyzing the data. We also have a huge concern on how the information is presented.

Inclusive education

We aim to develop technological solutions to enable an inclusive education for children with mixed abilities. We have mainly developed enhanced tangible objects for the acquisition of abstract concepts, such as mathematics or computational thinking. Besides the benefit of decreasing cognitive load and reinforcing understanding, manipulatives also support collaboration, making children more prone to divide, explore and share supporting cooperative actions.

Inclusive Gaming

By acknowledging that players have different needs and preferences, we explore strategies to create gaming experiences that are more engaging and inclusive to everyone!

Personalized Digital Interventions

We seek to tailor and personalize digital interventions to increase users motivation and adherence to the interventions. To this end, is crucial to gather a deep understanding of the intervention, context of use, benefits and difficulties associated and to accede to the mental models (goals, needs, motivations, etc) of the users.

HRI for Health & Accessibility

Robots have a very particular set of skills. Skills that have been acquired over a vast amount of reasearch. Skills that make them powerful tools to leverage for social inclusion, accessibility and interaction.

Smartphone Accessibility

From newcomers to experts, we have characterized the challenges that blind people overcome. We explored how to provide effective self-contained smartphone assistance with the ultimate goal of promoting self-efficacy.

SoftEdIBO aims to pioneer new soft robots to foster inclusion in mixed-ability groups. The project will examine the impact on inclusion of shared, personal, and separate surfaces using three soft robots, Touchibo Turtle, Tree, and Swarm. Children will be playing doctors! They “diagnose” and “treat” a soft robot patient by coordinating touch zones, pressure and rhythm. The robot responds with dynamic skin behaviours as feedback.

Personalization of User Interfaces

We explore solutions to increase the agency of individual users over the interfaces they use.

Unauthorized Access to Smartphones

Unlike unlock authentication, which is an active defense against physical intrusion, passive defenses aim to primarily provide awareness, traceability, and recovery from intrusions; and to only secondarily engage counter-measures like blocking access. In sensitive computer systems, passive security is embodied in Intrusion Detection and Response (IDR) systems. To end-users, however, parallel capabilities remain unavailable, or lack security and usability validation, despite the severe privacy implications of intrusions. We thus envision a mobile IDR which is usable by individuals with no technical training; which can detect suspicious activity based on semantics of intrusion behavior; and which can respond to threats per their importance.
